The diaphragm is a muscle located at the base of the rib cage that plays an important role in breathing. It separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and contracts and relaxes to help move air in and out of the lungs. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, creating more space in the chest cavity and allowing the lungs to expand and fill with air. When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves upward, decreasing the space in the chest cavity and causing the lungs to exhale air. The diaphragm also helps with other bodily functions such as vomiting, defecation, and urination.
